What are the limitations of a MRI of the Body?

Bone is better imaged by conventional x-rays in some cases and CT Scans are preferred for patients with severe bleeding. A MRI may not always distinguish between tumor tissue and edema fluid and does not detect calcium when this is present within a tumor. In most cases the examination is safe for patients with metal implants, with the exception of a few types of implants, so patients should inform the technician of an implant prior to the test. The examination must be used cautiously in early pregnancy. MRI typically costs more than CT scanning.

How does the MRI procedure work?

MRI is a unique imaging method because, unlike the usual radiographs (x-rays) or even Computed Tomography (CT) scanning, it does not rely on radiation. Instead radiofrequency waves are directed at protons, the nuclei of hydrogen atoms, in a strong magnetic field. The protons are first "excited" and then "relaxed," emitting radio signals that can be computer-processed to form an image. In the body, protons are most abundant in the hydrogen atoms of water—the "H" of H2O—so that an MR image shows differences in the water content and distribution in various body tissues. Even different types of tissue within the same organ, such as the gray and white matter of the brain, can easily be distinguished. Typically an MRI examination consists of two to six imaging sequences, each lasting two to 15 minutes. Each sequence has its own degree of contrast and shows a cross-section of the body in one of several planes (right to left, front to back, upper to lower).

Low Cost, Affordable, Discount Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Medical Discounts International is proud to offer low cost magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) discounts for people with no health insurance or high deductibles. Our contract facilities use the latest, state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Systems. With the latest NextWave technologies, our system can image in any orthogonal or oblique plane (including single and double axis obliques), using a wide variety of pulse sequences. Therefore, we are able to offer complete whole-body imaging including neurologic, musculoskeletal, and abdominal/pelvic evaluations.

The benefits of affordable MRIs are extended to more patients, particularly geriatric, pediatric, and trauma cases using the latest excite technology. Patients are able to feel they can breathe freely – and breathe easier with shorter exams.  Simply put, your study will be performed much more quickly and the quality will be unsurpassed. For you, an exam which may take 45-60 minutes on an older MRI will now take only 20 minutes. For your doctor, the improved quality of the images would provide a powerful aid in his diagnostic abilities and delivery of care

Our MRI system is designed with patient comfort in mind. It has a patient friendly Wide Open enclosure set and dual-flared short bore integrated Body Module. With this design, patient feels much more at-eased and relaxed. In fact, for most exams except for studies involving your head or neck, you are only partially placed into the bore and can actually see everything around you. In-bore ventilation system, two-way intercom system and hand-held call button also aid in your comfort.  With a state-of-the-art imaging scanning system, a friendly staff, and well-trained, board-certified radiologists dedicated to your care, we are confident that your MRI study with Medical Discounts International's MRI Diagnostic Centers will be a very enjoyable, pleasant experience.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Information

For your magnetic resonance imaging exam, the technologist will position you on a table that will slide into the scanner.  With the newest technology it takes only a few minutes, and unlike the older technology it is open.  A magnetic resonance imaging technologist will maintain constant communication with you throughout the exam. The resulting images will be reviewed and interpreted by a radiologist and a report will be sent to your doctor.

Because of the magnetic field, you will be asked to wear metal-free clothing.  You also will be asked to remove any metallic objects, such as jewelry, watches and hair clips.  Inform your technologist of prior surgeries or metal implants, such as pacemakers or aneurysm clips.

Difference between CT's, X-rays and MRI's...Unlike x-rays and CT's, MRI's do not use radiation.  Instead, magnetic resonance creates high-quality images through the combination of a strong magnetic field and radio waves.  MRI's can detect certain diseases much earlier than other medical imaging techniques, making it the diagnostic tool of choice for many physicians.

Body parts the MRI can evaluate...Physicians use the MRI scanner to examine one part of the body at a time.  The scanner can take pictures of the head, neck, back abdomen, pelvis, shoulder, elbow, knee, blood vessels and more.

Preparations...People having IV sedation or contrast (dye) should not eat for several hours prior to the test. Talk to the center to get specific instructions.

Risks...MRI's are considered safe.  There are no known health risks associated with the magnetic field or the radio waves used by the machine nor should there be any side effects.

Pregnant or breastfeeding...MRI's are not recommended for pregnant women unless it is medically indicated.  If you are breastfeeding and have contrast as part of your exam, please suspend nursing for 24 hours after the exam.

Noisy...Scanners work with strong metallic fields, which builds up energy.  The energy is released as loud knocking sounds.

What is MRI of the Body?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses radiofrequency waves and a strong magnetic field rather than x-rays to provide remarkably clear and detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues. The technique has proven very valuable for the diagnosis of a broad range of pathologic conditions in all parts of the body including cancer, heart and vascular disease, stroke, and joint and musculoskeletal disorders. MRI requires specialized equipment and expertise and allows evaluation of some body structures that may not be as visible with other imaging methods.

What are some common uses of the MRI procedure?

Because MRI can give such clear pictures of soft-tissue structures near and around bones, it is the most sensitive exam for spinal and joint problems. MRI is widely used to diagnose sports-related injuries, especially those affecting the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and wrist. The images allow the physician to see even very small tears and injuries to ligaments and muscles.

In addition, MRI of the heart, aorta, coronary arteries and blood vessels is a fast, noninvasive tool for diagnosing coronary artery disease and heart problems. Physicians can examine the size and thickness of the chambers of the heart and determine the extent of damage caused by a heart attack or progressive heart disease.

Organs of the chest and abdomen—including the lungs, liver, kidney, spleen pancreas and abdominal vessels—can also be examined in high detail with MRI, enabling the diagnosis and evaluation of tumors and functional disorders. MRI is growing in popularity as an alternative to traditional x-ray mammography in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Because no radiation exposure is involved, MRI is often the preferred diagnostic tool for examination of the male and female reproductive systems, pelvis and hips and the bladder.

How should I prepare for the procedure?

In most cases surgical staples, plates, pins and screws pose no risk during MRI if they have been in place for more than four to six weeks. Tattoos and permanent eyeliner may also create a problem. You will be asked if you have ever had a bullet or shrapnel in your body or ever worked with metal. If there is any question of metal fragments, you may be asked to have an x-ray that will detect any such metal objects. Tooth fillings usually are not affected by the magnetic field but they may distort images of the facial area or brain, so the radiologist should be aware of them. The same is true of braces, which may make it hard to "tune" the MRI unit to your body. You will be asked to remove anything that might degrade MRI images of the head, including hairpins, jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids and any removable dental work.

The radiologist or technologist may ask about drug allergies and whether head surgery has been done in the past. If you might be pregnant, this should be mentioned. Some patients who undergo MRI in an enclosed unit may feel confined or claustrophobic. If you are not easily reassured, a sedative may be administered. Roughly one in 20 patients will require medication to reduce the anxiety associated with claustrophobia.

What does the MRI equipment look like?

The conventional  MRI unit is a closed cylindrical magnet in which the patient must lie totally still for several seconds at a time and consequently may feel "closed-in" or truly claustrophobic. However, new "patient-friendly" designs are rapidly coming into routine use.

The "short-bore" systems are wider and shorter and do not fully enclose the patient. Some newer units are open on all sides, however the image quality may vary.

How does the procedure work?

MRI is a unique imaging method because, unlike the usual radiographs (x-rays), radioisotope studies or even Computed Tomography (CT) scanning, it does not rely on ionizing radiation. Instead radiofrequency waves are directed at protons, the nuclei of hydrogen atoms, in a strong magnetic field. The protons are first "excited" and then "relaxed," emitting radio signals that can be computer-processed to form an image. In the body, protons are most abundant in the hydrogen atoms of water—the "H" of H2O —so that an MR image shows differences in the water content and distribution in various body tissues.

How is the procedure performed?

The patient is placed on a sliding table and positioned comfortably for the MRI examination. Then the radiologist and technologist leave the room and the individual MRI sequences are performed. The patient is able to communicate with the radiologist or technologist at any time using an intercom. Also, many MRI centers allow a friend or, if a child is being examined, a parent to stay in the room. Depending on how many images are needed, the exam will generally take 15 to 45 minutes, although a very detailed study may take longer. You will be asked not to move during the actual imaging process, but between sequences some movement is allowed. Patients are generally required to remain still for only a few seconds to a few minutes at a time.

Depending on the part of the body being examined, a contrast material (usually gadolinium) may be used to enhance the visibility of certain tissues or blood vessels. A small needle connected to an intravenous line is placed in an arm or hand vein. A saline solution will drip through the intravenous line to prevent clotting until the contrast material is injected about two-thirds of the way through the exam.

When the exam is over the patient is asked to wait until the images are examined to determine if more images are needed. A radiologist experienced in MRI will analyze the images and send a report with his or her interpretation to the patient's personal physician. This should take only a few days or less.

What will I experience during the MRI procedure?

MRI causes no pain, but some patients can find it uncomfortable to remain still during the examination. Others experience a sense of being "closed in," though the more open construction of newer MRI systems has done much to reduce that reaction. You may notice a warm feeling in the area under examination; this is normal but if it bothers you the radiologist or technologist should be notified.

If a contrast injection is needed, there may be discomfort at the injection site and you may have a cool sensation at the site during the injection. Most bothersome to many patients are the loud tapping or knocking noises heard at certain phases of imaging. Ear plugs may help.

Who interprets the results and how do I get them?

A radiologist, who is a physician experienced in MRI and other radiology examinations, will analyze the images and send a signed report with his or her interpretation to the patient's personal physician. The patient receives MRI results from the referring physician who ordered the test. New technology also allows for distribution of diagnostic reports and referral images over the Internet at many facilities.

What are the benefits vs. risks?

Benefits

  • Images of the soft-tissue structures of the body—such as the heart, lungs, liver and other organs—are clearer and more detailed than with other imaging methods.
  • MRI can help physicians evaluate the function as well as the structure of many organs.
  • The detail makes MRI an invaluable tool in early diagnosis and evaluation of tumors.
  • MRI contrast material is less likely to produce an allergic reaction than the iodine-based materials used for conventional x-rays and CT scanning.
  • MRI enables the detection of abnormalities that might be obscured by bone with other imaging methods.
  • MRI provides a fast, noninvasive alternative to x-ray angiography for diagnosing problems of the heart and cardiovascular system.
  • Exposure to radiation is avoided.

Risks

  • An undetected metal may be affected by the strong magnetic field.
  • MRI is generally avoided in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Doctors usually use other methods of imaging, such as ultrasound, on pregnant women unless there is a strong medical reason to use MRI.

What are the limitations of MRI of the body?

Bone is better imaged by conventional x-rays in some cases and CT is preferred for patients with severe bleeding. MRI may not always distinguish between tumor tissue and edema fluid and does not detect calcium when this is present within a tumor. In most cases the examination is safe for patients with metal implants, with the exception of a few types of implants, so patients should inform the technician of an implant prior to the test. The examination must be used cautiously in early pregnancy. MRI typically costs more than CT scanning.

How can we offer lower MRI and CT Scan prices?

Major insurance companies and HMO's use their volume purchasing power to contract with quality imaging centers for much lower fees.  Similar to insurance companies, we have negotiated lower contract rates with state-of-the-art imaging centers.  However, unlike insurance companies who keep the difference to increase their profits, we pass on the lower contract rate to uninsured consumers who are paying for their own test. Uninsured consumers can save by scheduling their MRI or CT Scan at one of our quality state-of-the-art contract imaging facilities. Out of area patients can easily bring their MRI or CT Scan back with them on a CD, and have the radiologist report faxed to their doctor.

What is a CAT scan?

A computerized axial tomography scan is more commonly known by its abbreviated name, CAT scan or CT scan. It is an x-ray procedure which combines many x-ray images with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views and, if needed, three-dimensional images of the internal organs and structures of the body. A CAT scan is used to define normal and abnormal structures in the body and/or assist in procedures by helping to accurately guide the placement of instruments or treatments. A large donut-shaped x-ray machine takes x-ray images at many different angles around the body. These images are processed by a computer to produce cross-sectional pictures of the body. In each of these pictures the body is seen as an x-ray "slice" of the body, which is recorded on a film. This recorded image is called a tomogram. "Computerized Axial Tomography" refers to the recorded tomogram "sections" at different levels of the body.

Why are CAT scans performed?

CAT scans are performed to analyze the internal structures of various parts of the body. This includes the head, where traumatic injuries, (such as blood clots or skull fractures), tumors, and infections can be identified. In the spine, the bony structure of the vertebrae can be accurately defined, as can the anatomy of the intervertebral discs and spinal cord. In fact, CAT scan methods can be used to accurately measure the density of bone in evaluating osteoporosis..

Occasionally, contrast material (an x-ray dye) is placed into the spinal fluid to further enhance the scan and the various structural relationships of the spine, the spinal cord, and its nerves. CAT scans are also used in the chest to identify tumors, cysts, or infections that may be suspected on a chest x-ray. CAT scans of the abdomen are extremely helpful in defining body organ anatomy, including visualizing the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, aorta, kidneys, uterus, and ovaries. CAT scans in this area are used to verify the presence or absence of tumors, infection, abnormal anatomy, or changes of the body from trauma.

The technique is painless and can provide extremely accurate images of body structures in addition to guiding the radiologist in performing certain procedures, such as biopsies of suspected cancers, removal of internal body fluids for various tests, and the draining of abscesses which are deep in the body. Many of these procedures are minimally invasive and have markedly decreased the need to perform surgery to accomplish the same goal.

Are there risks in obtaining a CAT scan?

A CAT scan is a very low-risk procedure. The most common problem is an adverse reaction to intravenous contrast material. Intravenous contrast is usually an iodine-based liquid given in the vein, which makes many organs and structures, such as the kidneys and blood vessels much more visible on the CAT scan. There may be resulting itching, a rash, hives, or a feeling of warmth throughout the body. These are usually self-limiting reactions and go away rather quickly.

Toxicity to the kidneys which can result in kidney failure is an extremely rare complication of the intravenous contrast used in CAT scans. Diabetics, dehydrated individuals, or patients who already have impaired kidney function are most prone to this reaction. Newer intravenous contrast agents have been developed, such as Isovue, which have nearly eliminated this complication.

The amount of radiation a person receives during a CAT scan is minimal. In men and non-pregnant women, it has not been shown to produce any adverse effects. If a woman is pregnant, there may be a potential risk to the fetus, especially in the first trimester of the pregnancy. If a woman is pregnant, she should inform her doctor of her condition and discuss other potential methods of testing, such as an ultrasound, which are not harmful to the fetus.

How does a patient prepare for CAT scanning, and how is it performed?

In preparation for a CAT scan, patients are often asked to avoid food, especially when contrast material is to be used. Contrast material may be injected intravenously, or administered by mouth or by an enema in order to increase the distinction between various organs or areas of the body. Therefore, fluids and food may be restricted for several hours prior to the examination. If the patient has a history of allergy to contrast material (such as iodine), the requesting physician and radiology staff should be notified. All metallic materials and certain clothing around the body are removed because they can interfere with the clarity of the images.

Patients are placed on a movable table, and the table is slipped into the center of a large donut-shaped machine which takes the x-ray images around the body. The actual procedure can take from a half an hour to an hour and a half. If specific tests, biopsies, or intervention are performed by the radiologist during CAT scanning, additional time and monitoring may be required. It is important during the CAT scan procedure that the patient minimize any body movement by remaining as still and quiet as is possible. This significantly increases the clarity of the x-ray images. The CAT scan technologist tells the patient when to breathe or hold his/her breath during scans of the chest and abdomen. If any problems are experienced during the CAT scan, the technologist should be informed immediately. The technologist directly watches the patient through an observation window during the procedure and there is an intercom system in the room for added patient safety.

CAT scans have vastly improved the ability of doctors to diagnose many diseases earlier in their course and with much less risk than previous methods. Further refinements in CAT scan technology continue to evolve which promise even better picture quality and patient safety. Newer CAT scans called "spiral" or "helical" CAT scans can provide more rapid and accurate visualization of internal organs. For example, many trauma centers are using these scans to more rapidly diagnose internal injuries after serious body trauma.

CAT Scan Glossary of Terms

Abdomen: The belly , that part of the body that contains all of the structures between the chest and the pelvis . The abdomen is separated anatomically from the chest by the diaphragm , the powerful muscle spanning the body cavity below the lungs .
Aorta: The largest artery in the body, the aorta arises from the left ventricle of the heart, goes up (ascends) a little ways, bends over (arches), then goes down (descends) through the chest and through the abdomen to where ends by dividing into two arteries called the common iliac arteries that go to the legs.
Bone: Bone is the substance that forms the skeleton of the body. It is composed chiefly of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate . It also serves as a storage area for calcium, playing a large role in calcium balance in the blood.
CAT scan : Pictures of structures within the body created by a computer that takes the data from multiple X-ray images and turns them in pictures on a screen. The CAT (computerized axial tomography) scan can reveal some soft-tissue and other structures that cannot even be seen in conventional X-rays. Using the same dosage of radiation as that of an ordinary X-ray machine, an entire slice of the body can be made visible with about 100 times more clarity with the CAT scan.
Chest: The area of the body located between the neck and the abdomen . The chest contains the lungs , the heart and part of the aorta . The walls of the chest are supported by the dorsal vertebrae , the ribs , and the sternum .
Computerized axial tomography scan: Pictures of structures within the body created by a computer that takes the data from multiple X-ray images and turns them in pictures. The CAT (computerized axial tomography) scan can reveal some soft-tissue and other structures that cannot be seen in conventional X-rays. Using the same dosage of radiation as that of an ordinary X-ray machine, an entire slice of the body can be made visible with about 100 times more clarity with the CAT scan.
Contrast: Short for "contrast media." Contrast media are x-ray dyes used to provide contrast, for example, between blood vessels and other tissue.
CT scan: Computerized tomography scan. Pictures of structures within the body created by a computer that takes the data from multiple X-ray images and turns them into pictures on a screen. CT stands for computerized tomography.
Gallbladder: A pear-shaped organ just below the liver that stores the bile secreted by the liver. During a fatty meal, the gallbladder contracts, delivering the bile through the bile ducts into the intestines to help with digestion. Abnormal composition of bile leads to formation of gallstones.
Iodine: An essential element in the diet used by the thyroid gland to make thyroid hormones .
Kidney: One of a pair of organs located in the right and left side of the abdomen which clear "poisons" from the blood, regulate acid concentration and maintain water balance in the body by excreting urine. The kidneys are part of the urinary tract. The urine then passes through connecting tubes called "ureters" into the bladder. The bladder stores the urine until it is released during urination.
Liver: An organ in the upper abdomen that aids in digestion and removes waste products and worn-out cells from the blood. The liver is the largest solid organ in the body. The liver weighs about three and a half pounds (1.6 kilograms). It measures about 8 inches (20 cm) horizontally (across) and 6.5 inches (17 cm) vertically (down) and is 4.5 inches (12 cm) thick.
Organ: A relatively independent part of the body that carries out one or more special functions. The organs of the human body include the eye, ear, heart, lungs and liver.
Osteoporosis: Thinning of the bones with reduction in bone mass due to depletion of calcium and bone protein . Osteoporosis predisposes a person to fractures, which are often slow to heal and heal poorly. It is more common in older adults, particularly post-menopausal women; in patients on steroids; and in those who take steroidal drugs. Unchecked osteoporosis can lead to changes in posture , physical abnormality (particularly the form of hunched back known colloquially as " dowager's hump "), and decreased mobility.
Pancreas: A fish-shaped spongy grayish-pink organ about 6 inches (15 cm) long that stretches across the back of the abdomen, behind the stomach. The head of the pancreas is on the right side of the abdomen and is connected to the duodenum (the first section of the small intestine). The narrow end of the pancreas, called the tail, extends to the left side of the body.
Radiation:
1. Rays of energy. Gamma rays and x-ray are two of the types of energy waves often used in medicine. 2. The use of energy waves to diagnose or treat disease.
Radiologist: A physician specialized in radiology , the branch of medicine that uses ionizing and nonionizing radiation for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Scan: As a noun, the data or image obtained from the examination of organs or regions of the body by gathering information with a sensing device.
Spinal cord: The major column of nerve tissue that is connected to the brain and lies within the vertebral canal and from which the spinal nerves emerge. Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves originate in the spinal cord: 8 cervical , 12 thoracic , 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal. The spinal cord and the brain constitute the central nervous system ( CNS ). The spinal cord consists of nerve fibers that transmit impulses to and from the brain. Like the brain, the spinal cord is covered by three connective-tissue envelopes called the meninges . The space between the outer and middle envelopes is filled with cerebrospinal fluid ( CSF ), a clear colorless fluid that cushions the spinal cord against jarring shock. Also known simply as the cord.
Spine: 1) The column of bone known as the vertebral column, which surrounds and protects the spinal cord. The spine can be categorized according to level of the body: i.e., cervical spine (neck), thoracic spine (upper and middle back), and lumbar spine (lower back). See also vertebral column. 2) Any short prominence of bone. The spines of the vertebrae protrude at the base of the back of the neck and in the middle of the back. These spines protect the spinal cord from injury from behind.
Spleen: An organ located in the upper left part of the abdomen near the stomach . The spleen produces lymphocytes ; it is the largest lymphatic organ in the body. The spleen also filters the blood, serves as a major reservoir for blood and destroys blood cells that are aged.
Tomogram: A radiograph (x-ray) of a selected layer of the body made by tomography. A tomogram is a two-dimensional image representing a slice or section through a three-dimensional object. The term tomogram may be made more specific, as in nephrotomogram (tomogram of the kidney)
Tomography:
The process for generating a tomogram , a two-dimensional image of a slice or section through a three-dimensional object. Tomography achieves this remarkable result by simply moving an x-ray source in one direction as the x-ray film is moved in the opposite direction during the exposure to sharpen structures in the focal plane, while structures in other planes appear blurred. The tomogram is the picture; the tomograph is the apparatus; and tomography is the process.

Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT Scan Imaging)

State-of-the-Art Computerized Tomography (CT) Scans information, services and cash discounts. Affordable CT scans are available for people living and/or willing to come to Southern California for the test.  Cash discount CT Scans are now available in a beautiful, new, state of the art facility with the latest in CT Scan technology.  Board certified radiologists will interpret the results.

Multiple low-dose x-rays are taken in sequence by a rotating x-ray tube.  All you need to do is lie still on a table for approx. 5-20 minutes.  The table top will move you through an opening shaped like a big donut which houses the x-ray tube and set of detectors.  Images are acquired by detectors that pick up the x-ray that passes through your body.  The computer processes this information to form an image that the radiologist will review and interpret.  Some CT studies require a contrast agent to enhance the pictures that are taken of your body.  You will receive special instructions if your exam requires you to consume an oral contrast agent (barium sulphate) in advance.

CT Scans: Bringing Forth a New Era in Cardiovascular Scanning

Light Speed Ultra’s exceptional speed, thin slices and variable speed scanning provide the foundation and flexibility you need for advanced CT applications. It's the ideal CT system for every application -- from pediatric, trauma and chest/abdomen/pelvis exams, to angiography, cardiac, vascular and stroke assessment. Light Speed Ultra scans:  The heart in less than a breath hold - The entire body in just 26 seconds  A 500mm Chest/Abdomen/Pelvis with thin slices in 16 seconds

Faster exams mean patients spend less time on the table. Thinner slices deliver exceptional image quality, that minimizes rescans and maximizes diagnostic confidence. At nearly the same tube load, Light Speed Ultra scans with twice the speed, twice the coverage or one-half the slice thickness of the traditional four- slice CT.

The bottom line is Better Patient Care

Light Speed Ultra gives you the power to complete virtually any scan with no tube cooling delays or waiting times. Maximize throughput by performing faster exams and scheduling even long studies back to back. The speed of Light Speed Ultra is the perfect productivity complement to Light Speed’s productivity features  Offers a full range of pediatric protocols based upon a child’s size and weight to tailor the dose or treatment to the size of the patient. CardIQ Analysis automatically isolates the heart (removes surrounding structures), and creates a three-dimensional view. It includes protocols, optimized for the visualization different structures including Coronary Arteries, Calcified plaque, Heart Chambers, Bypass grafts and Stents

Advanced Vessel Analysis provides the tools to perform quick, flexible and accurate quantitative analysis of vascular anatomy. It provides maximum, minimum and mean intra-luminal diameter measurements and cross-sectional areas of true orthogonal sections of the aortoiliac systems at selected anatomical points. CT bypass graft imaging provides a rapid, low risk non-invasive angiographic method to assess that status of bypass grafts. As a non-invasive study, Coronary CTA does not present the inherent patient risk associated with invasive diagnostic cardiac catheterization while it does provide essential clinical information for management of post-surgical patients.

Computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan machines produce X-rays, a powerful form of electromagnetic energy. X-ray photons are basically the same thing as visible light photons, but they have much more energy. This higher energy level allows X-ray beams to pass straight through most of the soft material in the human body.  The computer takes all this information and puts together a 3-D image of the body.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI Scan) Glossary

Brain: That part of the central nervous system that is located within the cranium ( skull ). The brain functions as the primary receiver, organizer and distributor of information for the body. It has two (right and left) halves called "hemispheres."
Contrast: Short for "contrast media." Contrast media are x-ray dyes used to provide contrast, for example, between blood vessels and other tissue.
Heart: The muscle that pumps blood received from veins into arteries throughout the body. It is positioned in the chest behind the sternum (breastbone; in front of the trachea, esophagus, and aorta; and above the diaphragm muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities. The normal heart is about the size of a closed fist, and weighs about 10.5 ounces. It is cone-shaped, with the point of the cone pointing down to the left. Two-thirds of the heart lies in the left side of the chest with the balance in the right chest.
Magnetic resonance imaging : A special radiology technique designed to image internal structures of the body using magnetism, radio waves, and a computer to produce the images of body structures. In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the scanner is a tube surrounded by a giant circular magnet. The patient is placed on a moveable bed that is inserted into the magnet. The magnet creates a strong magnetic field that aligns the protons of hydrogen atoms, which are then exposed to a beam of radio waves. This spins the various protons of the body, and they produce a faint signal that is detected by the receiver portion of the MRI scanner. A computer processes the receiver information, and an image is produced. The image and resolution is quite detailed and can detect tiny changes of structures within the body, particularly in the soft tissue, brain and spinal cord, abdomen and joints.
MRI: Abbreviation and nickname for magnetic resonance imaging.
Scan: As a noun, the data or image obtained from the examination of organs or regions of the body by gathering information with a sensing device.
Stroke : The sudden death of some brain cells due to a lack of oxygen when the blood flow to the brain is impaired by blockage or rupture of an artery to the brain. A stroke is also called a cerebrovascular accident or, for short, a CVA.
Vertebrae: The preferred plural of vertebra. (The alternate plural is vertebras.)
